August of 2019 and 1.1 billion posts published monthly? If you guessed
WTumblr, then you’re in the know. What started out in 2007 as a way for
David Karp, Tumblr’s founder, to easily post media turned into a visual power-
house now owned by Verizon with millions of users.
What makes a Tumblr blog so appealing? It’s easy to use, and your image types
look great. Tumblr blogs differ from other social media blogs because you aren’t
encouraged to include long, involved text posts. They are meant to serve the
images that they display, and humor is encouraged. In this chapter, you look at
what you need to do to get started with Tumblr and how to show off your content
to its greatest advantage.
Setting Up Shop on Tumblr
Tumblr is free to join and is hosted for you on Tumblr’s site. You don’t have to
worry about getting your own hosting site or paying for a suitable WordPress or
other blogging templates. This is not insignificant. You probably don’t need to
hire a developer at the beginning to help you set up your site. However, if you
want to customize the template and develop special features, you’ll want to
consider some assistance.
