Looking at YouTube Basics
If you think that YouTube isn’t a marketing goliath, consider the following facts,
as of 2019:
» It has approximately 2 billion unique users per month.
» 35+ and 55+ age groups are the fastest growing YouTube demographics.
» Approximately 80 percent of the traffic on YouTube is from outside the United
States.
» YouTube accounts for 28 percent of all Google searches and is the world’s
second largest search engine after Google.
» Mobile views represent 70 percent of all YouTube video views globally.
Clearly, YouTube has all the muscle you need to drive your video SMM efforts.
Benefitting from SMM marketing
on YouTube
The first thing you need to decide is the extent to which you will market on
YouTube. You know that you want to participate, yet you’re not sure how much
time and effort to devote to it. To help you decide, here are some benefits you can
derive from marketing on YouTube:
» Visibility: First and foremost, being on YouTube puts you where the action is.
People come to YouTube to search for videos, and you want your video
nuggets to be found.
» Branding: Extending your branding to your videos is pretty straightforward.
Your logo and other design elements should be present, which assists in
brand recognition. If you don’t have these elements, you need to get them for
all your SMM efforts!
» No cost to set up: Unlike setting up a website, putting a video on YouTube
and creating a channel is free. If you already have videos you’ve created, all
you need to do is sign up. See the section later in this chapter called “Always
create a customized channel.”
The cost to create videos and all the work that goes into maintaining them
should also be factored in. It’s free to set up the YouTube channel, but
everything else has a time or money cost associated with it.
